There are many important aspects when configuring security of a network. One of the most essential features is passwords. By enforcing strict passwords, protection of a system can be greatly increased. Here are some recommendations for a strong password:
- Passwords should be at least 8 characters long.
- A capital alpha character, a lower case alpha character, at least one number, and at least one symbol should be included.
- Change your password every 3 to 6 months.
- Do not share passwords with anyone, especially co-workers.
- Try not to use complete words that are found in a dictionary. Do not simply write a word backwards either.
- Create a password that can be remembered without writing it down. Written down passwords can be found.
- Avoid using personal information like family member’s names, birthdays, phone numbers, etc.
There are free random password generators available online that can help create a strong password. Here is a link to just one: http://www.pctools.com/guides/password/
Sending Direct Deposit Notifications using MyAssistant
Written by Cheryl NorrisDoes your company provide payroll direct deposit for your employees? If so, how much of your time does it take every payroll period to complete the redundant task of distributing stubs? Would you like to save paper and time? MyAssistant (MA) for Sage Timberline Office (now Sage 300) has a solution.
Here's an outline of what's required:
- You enter an e-mail address for each recipient.
- You activate one of the pre-built MyAssistant tasks. You create a condition that looks for employee check records that have a direct deposit deduction. You attach a Crystal report custom check stub that's sent as a pdf attachment to each e-mail.
- You set up an MA reminder that notifies you when it's time to run the previous task. This reminder happens automatically after you complete PR>Tasks>Generate direct deposits.
Like most new time-saving systems, up-front setup time & costs will pay for themselves quickly. Then you can let MyAssistant be your virtual personal assistant, while you move on to better things - maybe even LUNCH!

Do you know the difference between Managers and Leaders?
A Manager is an administrator , focuses on systems and structures, relies on control, has a short-range view, imitates, accepts the status quo and does things right.
Leaders are innovators, focus on people, inspire trust, have a long-range perspective, challenge the status quo and do the right things.

What can you do to keep your consulting costs down?
Written by Jacquie RaymoEveryone uses consultants from time to time, especially in the accounting arena. Not everyone can be an expert on their software. In most cases the client is aware of the value, and therefore the cost of "asking the expert".... But, there are some people feel even when they ask for help, it costs too much...
MyAssistant Reminders Linked to Task Scheduling
Written by Cheryl NorrisA few months ago, I explained how MyAssistant can outshine even Microsoft Outlook when it comes to reminding us to do important tasks. It does so by giving us the ability to remind multiple users about the same task. Whether in MyAssistant or Outlook, a reminder runs on a schedule, right?
As of the latest release of MyAssistant (MA) for 9.7 or 9.8, Sage added a new way to schedule tasks. Here's where this handy personal assistant really sets itself apart. In addition to the daily / weekly /monthly schedule, we now have the option to run an MA task at the conclusion of most activities within each application.
